Ask the Experts: Painting
Q: Is it possible to paint paneling? And, if so, what must be done to insure the paint will remain and not fall off? - Max F.
A: Good question, Max! There are a couple of way to tackle painting paneling. First, you must remove the surface shine or the paintg will not adhere.
You can sand it...but that takes lots and lots of elbow grease, or you can use a deglosser, one area at a time, and you will have the surface ready to paint in no time. (HINT! If you decide to sand be sure to wipe the surface down with a tack cloth to remove the dust particples, or they will float to the surface of your paint and make the surface bumpy.)
Depending on the color you want for a top coat, you may want to prime the surface first. This will keep the darker undercoat from bleeding through.
You will want to use a thick nap roller cover when applying the paint, so that it goes into the paneling grooves.
Painting paneling really makes a room seem larger and brighter, but like any task, it takes prep work and elbow grease. Have fun and please come see us if we can help with more ideas, rollers, deglossers, or paint.
